The documentary is a non-fiction film that “documents" reality in some way. Legend has it that the term was coined by our own John Grierson to describe what he called the "creative treatment of actuality." Others prefer Dziga Vertov's inducement for documentary to present "life as it is". Whether taking the form as cinéma vérité, advocacy, or personal expression, the subject matter of documentary is as unlimited as the filmmaker’s imagination. This course will present and explore the great documentaries, past and cutting edge, Canadian and international in a celebration of this very exciting and so relevant film genre.
